Umayyad Dinar (Minted in 131 AH) – Reign of Marwan ibn Muhammad
In Rabi I 132 AH, allegiance was pledged to Abu al-Abbas al-Saffah in Kufa. In Jumada II of the same year, the Umayyad caliphate fell after the Battle of the Zab. A year earlier, in 131 AH, this gold dinar was struck, weighing 4.3 grams.
Caliph Marwan ibn Muhammad, born in 72 AH, led the state amid constant revolts. Gold kept the form set by Abd al-Malik ibn Marwan's reform fifty-four years before: the declaration of faith and the date of minting on both faces. It is a link in a golden chain that ran for more than half a century, and the Encyclopedia lists a dinar of 132 AH after it.
