Umayyad Dirham (Minted in Marw, 130 AH) – Reign of Marwan ibn Muhammad
Abu Muslim al-Khurasani entered Marw in 130 AH. The city, once the centre of Khurasan, became a focus of the Abbasid movement. That same year, rebels against the Umayyad state struck this dirham there, with the verse from Surat al-Shura: “Say, I ask of you no reward for it except love for my kinsfolk.”
The mint had struck Umayyad dirhams until 115 AH. In 127 and 128 AH, Kharijites struck dirhams there reading “Of what the Amir al-Kirmani ibn Ali ordered.” Under Marwan ibn Muhammad, coins were struck in 27 cities, and Marw was one of them, in an empire full of revolts. Two years later, the state fell. At 2.9 grams and rated Very Rare, this dirham carries a Quranic slogan from a region in a decisive year.
