Umayyad Dirham (Minted in Ifriqiya, 129 AH) – Reign of Marwan ibn Muhammad

At the far western edge of the state, in Ifriqiya, this dirham was struck in 129 AH. The mint struck Umayyad dirhams thirty times from 97 AH. It resumed work from 128 to 132 AH, and 132 AH was its last year.

In those years Marwan ibn Muhammad, born in 72 AH and the fourteenth and last Umayyad caliph, faced unrest across the empire. Coins in his reign came from 27 cities, from state mints, rebels and Kharijites.

This dirham came fifty-two years after Abd al-Malik ibn Marwan's monetary reform of 77 AH, and it carries the mark of the state in a province far from Damascus. It weighs 2.7 grams.
