Tarikh al-Tabari: Tarikh al-Umam wa al-Muluk (The History of al-Tabari: History of Nations and Kings)
The History of al-Tabari, also known as the History of Nations and Kings, is one of the most important early sources of Islamic history, written by Imam Abu Jafar Muhammad ibn Jarir al-Tabari. It recounts the nations, prophets and kings from the beginning of creation, then turns to the life of the Prophet and the history of the Islamic state, following its events and caliphs year by year to the early fourth century AH. Al-Tabari gathers historical reports with their chains of transmission and often gives more than one account of the same event, which made the book a principal source for many later historians of Islam.
