Umayyad Dirham (Minted in Ganza 95 AH) Reign of Al-Walid bin Abd al-Malik

"Ganza" (Ganja) was a rarity among Caucasian cities, located in present-day Azerbaijan. This dirham was struck there in 95 AH to witness the Arab-Islamic presence in those cold highlands. Its extreme rarity indicates limited minting at the time; this dirham was likely allocated for the salaries of military garrisons stationed there, serving as a silent witness to the efforts of establishing Islam in those rugged frontier regions.<!-- notionvc: 83e61677-01d3-4651-be3c-766a6d6b6b92 -->
