Umayyad Dirham (Minted in Ifriqiya, 98 AH) – Reign of Sulayman ibn Abd al-Malik

Kairouan was founded by Uqba ibn Nafi al-Fihri in 50 AH, becoming the capital of the Ifriqiya province in the Maghreb.

This very rare dirham was struck in 98 AH, bearing the name of a province far from the capital Damascus, affirming that Umayyad monetary reforms had reached the farthest western provinces.

The issue's rarity reflects how limited silver output was in the Maghreb at the time, giving it exceptional historical value for tracing the movement of currency in the Islamic West.
