Umayyad Dirham (Minted in Mahi, 92 AH) – Reign of al-Walid ibn Abd al-Malik

Mahi belonged to the mountainous Mahat district of western Iran, whose administrative cities linked the western Persian highlands to the cities of Iraq through a distinct tax system.

This dirham documents the continuity of that fiscal bond under Al-Walid ibn Abd al-Malik, turning highland resources into currency destined for treasuries far from its place of minting.

It shows how the Umayyad administration harnessed natural resources and rugged terrain, folding them into a tightly organized network for striking silver and collecting revenue under unified central standards.
