Extremely Rare Umayyad Dirham (Jundaysabur, 79 AH) — Reign of Abd al-Malik ibn Marwan

From Jundaysabur — the city that was the pride of the Sasanian kings and a centre of ancient medicine — this dirham emerged in the year 79 AH to proclaim the sovereignty of the new state.

The dirham embodies the meeting of civilisations: the venerable Persian mints continued their work, but this time under the banner of the Umayyads. This coinage documents the skill of the Persian craftsman as he engraved Arabic Kufic script, for the first time, upon the coin of his own city.
