Umayyad Dirham (Minted in Balkh 82 AH) Reign of Abd al-Malik bin Marwan
From "Balkh," the Mother of Cities and the Jewel of Khurasan, comes this rare and unpublished dirham. It gains significance from the city's status as a spiritual and political capital for the eastern Islamic world. This dirham documents the year 82 AH, a decisive phase in the conquests of Qutayba bin Muslim al-Bahili in those regions. It served as a currency of war, funding the campaigns that opened Transoxiana and spread Islam there.<!-- notionvc: b3b824fc-4f65-469b-9fb8-5a74e392bab9 -->
