Umayyad Dirham (Minted in Fil 79 AH) Reign of Abd al-Malik bin Marwan
From the city of "Fil" in Khwarezm, that remote region, comes this dirham to demonstrate the vast extent of the Umayyad Caliphate. The date 79 AH represents a very early stage for the appearance of Arabization in those territories, making this piece a political document proving the submission of distant trade routes to the authority of Damascus, as the Islamic dirham penetrated to replace local currencies in the markets of Central Asia.<!-- notionvc: e1613bf9-9504-4325-9718-7a219b580969 -->
