Umayyad Dinar (Minted in 115 AH) – Reign of Hisham ibn Abd al-Malik

The previous year saw the Battle of Tours (Balat al-Shuhada) in west-central France, where the commander Abd al-Rahman al-Ghafiqi fell fighting the Franks. The battle marked a turning point that halted Umayyad expansion north of the Pyrenees.

This dinar, in the standard design, was struck the year after that major military setback. Its gold standard held steady despite the turmoil on the far western front.
