Umayyad Dirham (Minted in Marw, 110 AH) – Reign of Hisham ibn Abd al-Malik

Merv was the capital of eastern Khurasan and a major administrative and military centre. Since the days of the early caliphs, the Caliphate had directed its Central Asian campaigns from here. It kept that standing in Hisham's reign, even as the state was occupied with distant fronts such as Al-Andalus and the Caucasus.

Struck in 110 AH in this Khurasani city, this dirham records Merv's steady administrative role across decades of changing caliphs.
